Their friend, Jeanie Knight will also be taking part in the annual Exmouth Christmas Day Swim, which attracts thousands of people in festive fancy dress. (more…)

  4. Hope family win Air Ambulance Jackpot!

    December 2, 2011

We were delighted to be able to present a £1,000 cheque to the Hope family from Somerset last week after they won the Jackpot prize in our ‘Flight for Life’ weekly lottery draw.

Liann and Stephen Hope from Bishops Lydeard have been members of the lottery since November 2006.

The ‘Flight for Life Lottery’ is the easiest and most sustainable way that the public can support us.  It costs £1-a-week to join and has five main cash prizes including a Jackpot of £1,000 and a number of other consolation prizes.  Unlike the National Lottery, there are no rollovers so the prizes must be won each week. 5. Mother says thank you after toddler’s Air Ambulance dash

    December 1, 2011

THE mother of a toddler who fell seriously ill last week has praised the people who helped him on the road to recovery.

Thanks to the support of staff and members of the public at Riversmeet Leisure Centre in Gillingham, medical professionals in Bristol and Yeovil, and the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, 16-month-old Sebastian Carr is on the mend after suffering febrile convulsions.

Sebastian’s mother, Lissy, was taking him to a picnic with friends when she noticed he was behaving unusually. By the time she parked her car at Riversmeet Leisure Centre, Sebastian was completely unresponsive. (more…)

  6. House Harriers make no HASH of it!

    November 30, 2011

Over 500 hashers took part in the Red Dress charity run organized by The Wessex Hash House Harriers earlier this year.

Based upon the old Hare and Hound paper-chase, ‘hashing’ is arguably the largest participation sport in the world.  Started in Kuala Lumpur in 1938 it has over 2,000 Chapters all over the world.  One tradition of the Hash is to hold a charity run with all participants, men and women, wearing red dresses.

It stems from an unsuspecting girlfriend of an American hasher turning up for a run wearing an expensive red dress instead of the usual rather bizarre and usually politically incorrect T-shirt.  It was then decided to mark the occasion with a run whereby all the proceeds are given to charity. 8. Pedal Power and Trekkers Tribute

    November 15, 2011

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that has contributed to the success of our two Charity-run events this year.

Earlier in June, we held our first ever Coast to Coast Cycle Challenge and subsequently at the end of September we held our 3rd annual Trickey Warren Trek.

The Coast to Coast Cycle Challenge is a 54 mile cycle which begins in Watchet, Somerset and ends in West Bay, Dorset.  The Trickey Warren Trek is an individual and team 4k and 10k running event and a 2k fun run which is held at Culmhead Airfield on the Blackdown Hills in Somerset.

Both events were extremely well attended and together they have generated thousands of pounds for the Charity. (more…)

  9. Bishop visits Air Ambulance on ‘whistle stop’ tour

    November 15, 2011

We were delighted to welcome the Bishop of Bath and Wells during a visit to our Henstridge airbase last week.

Rt Revd Peter Price, accompanied by Prebendary Rose Hoskins spent some time with our staff, crew members and a number of our volunteers during their ‘whistle stop’ tour of the rural deaneries.

On arrival, they were met by Bill Sivewright, DSAA Chief Executive Officer who introduced the Bishop to the Crew.  The Crew then explained the workings of the helicopter and gave an overview on how the medical equipment on board was used during an emergency flight.

After the practical demonstrations, they received a short presentation highlighting how the DSAA is funded.  Bill explained the different fundraising activities that help generate the £1.4 million a year we need to raise to keep flying. (more…)
