Friends of a dad who tragically died on the M5 clubbed together to raise a generous sum for the air ambulance.
Simon Stabbins, of Winscombe, who died on the motorway earlier this month, was airlifted to Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton with his injured son Ryan, 15, when they were struck on their trike on the way to watch cricket.
A night of fundraising was held for the 49-year-old at the Winscombe Club on Friday and a Bristol City shirt signed by all the players, a barrel of cider from Thatchers and other attractions raised £1,000.
Simon’s brother Micky handed over the cheque to Nick Pearce of Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance and thanked the many people who had donated so generously in so many ways. (more…)

For the second year running, Wimborne and Ferndown Lions Club were delighted to be able to hand over a cheque for £5000 to the DASAA at their annual Charter dinner. This event took place at Canford Magna Golf Club on Saturday 7th November and was attended by 100 club members and their guests. The cheque was accepted by Tracy Bartram on behalf of the DASAA who graciously replied on behalf of the assembled guests.
The occasion in fact coincided with the 40th anniversary of the Wimborne and Ferndown Lions Club.
Originally formed as the Wimborne Lions in the days when Ferndown was a village, the name changed to reflect Ferndown’s growth although we extend from Corfe Mullen to Verwood. Like all Lions clubs (80+ in the UK), we are dedicated to raising money to give primarily to local welfare and deserving development needs, though we sometimes contribute more widely through our parent organisation, Lions Clubs International. Over the last year the Wessex Gold Wings have had a variety of events to raise funds for the Dorset & Somerset Air Amubulance. One such Rally was held at Henstridge Airfield where the Air Ambulance is based, and had more than 100 different types of motor bikes and trikes. They have currently raised over £2000, and presented it to the Crew and the local Fundraising Coordinator Annette Plaistow-Trapaud for West Dorset.
Once again the Wessex Gold Wings will be supporting us in 2010 and are already helping with large events such as the Noel in November.
